Target Date Funds and Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice

Consider either a target date fund or Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice if you:

  • Want a simple way to invest
  • Don't feel comfortable managing a portfolio
  • Appreciate a professionally managed mix of investments

TARGET DATE FUNDS

These funds are pre-mixed, broadly diversified funds that adjust their investments (i.e., asset allocation) over time, becoming more conservative as you approach the target retirement year. You can pick the target date fund that most closely matches the year in which you expect to retire or a different target date fund if you think it better matches your personal circumstances.

A target date fund is designed to be a single-choice approach to managing your investment strategy. There is generally no need to combine one fund with another.

MANAGED ACCOUNT SERVICE

With Fidelity® Personalized Planning & Advice, professional managers will create a personalized plan for you, put the plan into action, and routinely monitor your account and rebalance it, as needed, for an annual fee. All participants receive quarterly retirement updates.

Create Your Own Investment Mix

Consider creating your own investment mix if you:

  • Want more choice and flexibility
  • Understand investment concepts
  • Feel comfortable creating and maintaining your investments
  • Work with your own investment advisor

Investment options include:

  • Four objective-based funds that address fundamental investment objectives, each with a different risk and reward potential
  • Three passive (index) funds designed to closely track a specific index, like the S&P 500 Index
  • Self-directed brokerage — Fidelity BrokerageLink® gives you access to more than 10,000 mutual funds for your retirement savings beyond the investment options available in the Medtronic 401(k) Plan’s lineup
  • Online advice If you need help with investing decisions, you can access Fidelity’s online Planning and Guidance Center for help with how much to save, identifying an asset mix that aligns with your goals, and creating a plan for retirement. Fidelity’s experienced phone representatives will also be available to help

ABOUT DIVERSIFICATION

Diversification is spreading your savings among a variety of investments. Diversification helps reduce market risk and helps protect against volatility that can result from putting your money in just one investment or asset class. Target date funds are a “pre-diversified” investment alternative; generally, there is no need to invest in anything other than a target date fund to achieve a diversified investment portfolio within the Medtronic 401(k) Plan.
